The 11th Virginia Infantry Regiment was organized for State service in May 1861, and was accepted into Confederate States service on July 1, 1861.  It was reorganized on April 26, 1862.

The regiment consisted of the following 10 companies:

Garland, Samuel., Jr.  Col., 1861-1862 (to Brig. Gen. May 1862)
Funsten, David, Col., 1862-1863 (wded; resgnd)
Langhorne, Maurice Scatsbrooke, Col., 1863-1864 (ret. Dec. 25, 1864)
Otey, Kirkwood, Col., 1864-1865

Company A - Lynchburg Rifle Greys, Campbell County; riflemen; organized in January 1860; enlisted April 22, 1861, for one year; reorganized April 26, 1862.  Captains: Maurice S. Langhorne (to maj, August 21, 1861), George Woodville Latham (ret. April 26, 1862), Robert Miller Mitchell, Jr.

Company B - Southern Guards, Yellow Branch, Campbell County; light infantry; enlisted April 23, 1861, for one year; reorganized April 26, 1862.  Captains: Robert Chancellor Saunders (ret. April 26, 1862), Thomas Benton Horton.

Company C
- Clifton Greys, Campbell County; riflemen; enlisted May 16, 1861, for one year; formerly Co. E (1st), 28th Regiment, VA. Inf., and reported in June 1861, to have been transferred to the 11th Regiment, Va. Inf; reorganized April 26, 1862.  Captains: Adam Clement (to maj. 1862), William Henry Morgan.

Company D - Fincastle Rifles, Botetourt County; existed in December 1859; enlisted April 23, 1861, for one year; reorganized April 26, 1862.  Captains: William H. Anthony, Robert K. Thompson (elected May 16, 1861; resigned July 1861). David Gardiner Houston, Jr. (k. July 3, 1863), John Thomas James.

Company E - Lynchburg Rifles, Campbell County; enlisted April 19, 1861; mustered June 3, 1861; reorganized April 26, 1862.  Captains: James Edward Blankenship (resigned August 25, 1861), Christopher Valentine Winfree (retired April 26, 1862), John Cabell Ward.

Company F - Preston Guards (also Montgomery Guards), Montgomery County; enlisted May 29, 1861, for one year; reorganized April 26, 1862.  Captains: Eusebius Fowlkes (k. May 1862), Robert W, Douthat.

Company G - Lynchburg Home Guard, Campbell County; organized November 8, 1859; enlisted April 23, 1861, at Lynchburg for one year; mustered into service at Richmond on April 24, 1861; reorganized April 26, 1862.  Captains: Samuel Garland, Jr. (to Colonel May 7, 1861), Kirkwood Otey (elected May 9, 1861, to Major, May 28, 1862), John Holmes Smith.

Company H
- Jeff Davis Guard (also Jefferson Davis Riflemen), Lynchburg, Campbell County; enlisted and mustered into service May 15, 1861, for one year; reorganized April 26, 1862.  Captains: James Risque Hutter (to Major April 26, 1862), James W. Hord.

Company I - Rough and Ready Rifles, Fauquier and Culpeper Counties; riflemen; enlisted May 25, 1861, for one year; mustered June 4, 1861; reorganized April 26, 1862.  Captains: James Henry Jameson (resigned April 26, 1862), Andrew J. Jones.

Company K - Valley Regulators, Botetourt and Rockbridge Counties; enlisted May 25, 1861, for one year; reorganized April 26, 1862.  Captains: Albert Almond Yeatman (resigned April 26, 1862), Andrew Mathew Houston.
